October in South America

I found myself in someone else’s spring.
I left autumn chill and shortened days,
Walking amidst blooming lilacs.
Grapevines were wearing baby leaves.

I left autumn chill and shortened days.
Instead of geese and ducks and cranes.
Grapevines were wearing baby leaves.
Condors wheeled and skimmed the mountain tops.

Instead of geese and ducks and cranes,
Snow run-off was running away with rafters.
Condors wheeled and skimmed the mountain tops.
Walnut trees wore bees and blossoms.

Snow run-off was running away with rafters,
Wet suits and breath-sucking cold.
Walnut trees wore bees and blossoms.
Laughing children looked down from a bridge.

Wet suits and breath-sucking cold.
Seeking a seat by the fire.
Laughing children looked down from a bridge.
Eating steaming bowls of pastel de choclo.

Seeking a seat by the fire.
Walking amidst blooming lilacs.
Eating steaming bowls of pastel de choclo.
I found myself in someone else’s spring.
