excerpt #2 from Carrying Corpses

the ocean
finds me
behind a seven-eleven
in gallup

hey man
you want some ocean?

a guy holds up
a plastic jug
of hair spray
mixed with water

so I know
it must be sunday:
no liquor sales

the drunks
buy hairspray

and sail off
in gallon milk jugs

the convenience stores
stock up
every weekend

I shake
my disheveled head

I carry my own ocean

my feet
will pound the rocks
into dust
